Equipoise is the brand name of the anabolic steroid Boldenone. It is an oil-based injectable with an added undecylenate ester. Added ether helps increase half-life and release rate. The substance is a derivative of testosterone with symmetrical anabolic power, but with a reduced androgenic effect. Equipoise is a drug used in veterinary medicine. But it has gained popularity among bodybuilders and athletes as a form of testosterone, a derivative with less estrogenic and androgenic activity.
They like to compare Equipoise to Nandrolone (Deca-Durabolin), but it’s not the best comparison because Nandrolone has different properties and a completely different class of compounds (19-nor or progestin). However, many consider Equipoise and Nandrolone to be interchangeable drugs, even in anabolic steroid cycles.
Description and history of the drug
Equipoise was developed in 1949, before Dianabol (Methandrostenolone), which technically makes it the first synthetic testosterone derivative. Also, Dianabol itself is actually Equipoise (Boldenone). The difference is in the chemical structure where the methyl group is attached to the 17-beta hydroxyl (also known as C17-alpha alkylation). This structure makes the substance bioavailable orally. In general, Dianabol could be considered an oral form of equilibrium, but the methylation of the 17th carbon atom changed the properties of the compound so much that it began to be attributed to completely different anabolic steroid analogues and was called Methandrostenolone (Dianabol).
If we look at the images of the chemical structure of Equipoise and Dianabol, we can see that they have the same structure except for the methyl group attached to the 17 carbon element of the Dianabol structure. Otherwise, it’s pretty clear that these two anabolic steroids are pretty much the same thing.
Equipoise, developed in 1949, was not released until the 1960s under the Parenabol brand. Throughout this time, Ciba has been creating and testing various modifications of Equipoise, trying to attach esters to it and thus increase its half-life and release rate.
The final decision was the release of Undecylenate Boldenone, with the attached ester of the same name. Subsequently, from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, various studies and experiments were carried out with Parenabol for use as an anabolic steroid that stimulates and preserves muscle mass, used for the treatment of osteoporosis and diseases accompanied by emaciation and weight. lost. At the end of the 1970s, Parenabol was used in an extremely narrow area, and that is why the drug was taken out of production.
Subsequently, one of the companies will receive the patents for this anabolic steroid and relaunch Boldenone under the name Equipoise.
It is now a veterinary anabolic steroid used primarily in horses and less frequently in other animals. Equipoise is well known as a drug to increase muscle strength. Like all anabolic steroids, it stimulates the appetite, but unlike the others, it does so to a much higher (superlative) degree. The manufacturers and sellers of Equipoise have changed over time, but Equipoise is still available in US and global markets under a variety of trade and brand names.
As mentioned above, Equipoise is a synthetic derivative of testosterone, with a modified structure, where double bonds are added between 1 and 2 carbons. This change reduces Equipoise’s ability to interact with aromatase (the enzyme responsible for converting androgens to estrogen). As a result, the estrogenic activity of Equipoise will be lower than that of testosterone. Equipoise is a boldenone with an undecylenate ester attached. “Undecylenate” – undecylenic acid, in interaction with boldenone, creates a bond called in chemistry ester (ester bond). In the chemical structure of boldenone, undecylenic acid is attached to a 17-beta-hydroxyl group. Adding this ester increases the release rate of the hormone and its half-life. As soon as boldenone undecylenate enters the bloodstream, enzymes in the body begin the process of breaking the bond between the ether and the hormone. The release of the main ether substance occurs at different rates, but as a result, enzymes remove the ester, and pure boldenone remains in the body, freely performing its function. This fermentation process with the release of the ester hormone has the effect of slowing down the rate of release of the main active ingredient. Summarizing the above, it can be noted that Undecylenate, along with Boldenone, increases the latter’s half-life by 14 days. Thus, without an ester, the hormone does not provide sufficiently slow release and necessary activity.
As stated at the beginning of this section, Equipoise and Dianabol are structurally identical. The only difference between the two is that Equipoise contains the Undecylenate ester attached to its 17beta hydroxyl group, while Dianabol contains a methyl group attached to the 17beta hydroxyl. Dianabol’s methyl group (also known as C17-alpha alkylation) helps prevent it from being metabolized and broken down by the liver when taken orally.
Except for this difference, these two hormones are absolutely identical and will hereinafter be considered as the same compound. However, upon entering the body, Equipoise and Dianabol manifest in different ways. This is very convincing evidence that the addition of a methyl group (C17-alpha alkylation) at carbon 17 not only affects the hormone’s resistance to liver breakdown, but alters the action and properties of the set of the anabolic steroid. .
As Equipoise is derived from testosterone, this gives it many symmetrical properties. First, it has the exact same degree of anabolic potency (index 100). Second, Equipoise is an aromatizable anabolic steroid and through interaction in the body with the aromatase enzyme, it can be converted into estrogen. The modification with a double bond between carbon atoms 1 and 2 reduces its ability to aromatize and therefore provides less estrogenic activity of Equipoise in the body.
All of this means that Equipoise converts to estrogen, but in much lower amounts than its parent hormone, testosterone. This positive property does not exclude the manifestation of estrogenic side effects, which should be taken into account when taking the drug. Therefore, do not expect Equipoise to not retain water in the body. This will only happen to a relatively minor extent. Of course, everything is individual and depends on the sensitivity of the body to the drug.
But, in moderate doses, Equipoise should not cause water retention in the body or any other negative manifestations. At the same time, the risk of side effects will increase as the dose of the drug increases, since an increase in the equilibrium concentration in the body will symmetrically increase the rate of aromatization to estrogen.
The drug Equipoise itself is characterized by a low level of androgenic strength (lower than that of the parent hormone, testosterone).Such a positive moment is important for people sensitive to the manifestations of even minor androgenic side effects. With Equipoise, one can expect gains in strength, volume, and mass that are symmetrical to those achieved with testosterone, but with less evidence of estrogenic activity and androgenic side effects. This means that the benefits of Equipoise, for the most part, will be fairly solid dry weight gain with minimal water retention (depending on dosage). It will be the perfect addition to any volume or muscle growth class.
And in some courses, Equipoise can even become a substitute for Nandrolone. Unlike nandrolone, Equipoise is not a progestogen and has fewer side effects of suppressing natural testosterone production.
It is important to understand that the drug will not give rapid muscle growth, the process will be much slower compared to other anabolic steroids, but the long term results and the absence of side effects when used correctly are the obvious advantages of Equipoise.
As mentioned above, Equipoise exhibits less estrogenic activity in the body than testosterone. Equipoise aromatizes in the body at about half the rate of aromatization that testosterone exhibits. This means that the side effects associated with Equipoise should be significantly lower than those of testosterone. But here it is important to remember that the estrogenic activity of Equipoise will be slightly higher than that of Nandrolone (Deca).Of course, if you increase the dosage, the aromatization (and, therefore, the estrogenic effect) will increase proportionally. In such cases, anti-estrogens and aromatase inhibitors will be needed to help prevent the manifestation of negative factors. Estrogenic side effects may include: fluid retention, increased blood pressure (due to fluid retention), increased body fat percentage (increased body fat), and potential development of gynecomastia.
Androgenic side effects, although to a much lesser degree than testosterone, are still possible with Equipoise. It interacts with the enzyme 5-AR (5-alpha reductase), which is responsible for converting testosterone into the more potent androgen DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Equipoise does not convert to DHT, but rather converts to dihydroboldenone (DGB) at a much slower rate than testosterone to DHT.
Androgenic side effects may include: oilier skin (sebum secretion), increased acne (associated with sebum secretion), body and facial hair growth and (if predisposed genetics) an increased risk of male pattern baldness.
Equipoise is non-toxic, does not affect the liver, and is associated with the same degree of cardiovascular disease risk and suppression of endogenous testosterone production as most anabolic steroids.
Courses and application
Equipoise classes, in combination with testosterone in its various modifications, are usually aimed at gaining muscle mass. Typically, testosterone enanthate or testosterone cypionate, ester forms corresponding to Equipoise’s long half-life, are used. They are long cycles compared to other compounds, mainly due to the half-life, which allows a slow release of the main active substance and, therefore, requires more time to show a visible effect.
The Equipoise course for beginners is usually used in combination with Testosterone Enanthate (or Cypionate), which helps to ensure a significant increase in muscle mass in the long term. Intermediate cycles of Equipoise may also include the use of an oral compound such as Dianabol (Methandrostenolone). The amount of testosterone enanthate (or cypionate) in this case can be reduced just to maintain normal physiological function. Dianabol is added every 1-4 weeks and the total cycle length is 12 weeks.
Since the half-life of Equipoise is 14 days, it is ideal to split the weekly dose into two equal doses.
